Silent Stalker
At the foot of the Lincolnshire Wolds, near the village of Baumber, you will find the beautiful Stourton Estate. The primary business is farming, mainly arable across fifteen hundred acres, supported by forest management through Stourton Forestry. The business manages other peoples’ woodlands as well as their own 100 acres of woodland that is under restoration. Here they are producing a range of eco-friendly products including woodchip, bark, soil improver and logs, providing added value and creating a profit fund that is returned to the restoration. The landscape at Stourton comprises scenic lakes, parkland and the woodland, steeped in history dating back to medieval times. Making an additional contribution to the restoration of the estate is the latest attraction: a deer walk among the red deer recently introduced to the park. The estate had, for some time, used a Polaris Ranger UTV for general work around the farm. A talk with local Polaris dealers Lawnmower Service, the Wellingore based, family-owned company, led to the decision to use an electric 4 x 4 Ranger EV to tow a little nine seat trailer, for moving visitors around the estate. “The red deer are very flighty,” says Stourton’s Antony Strawson “so the EV comes into its own when driving through the field, and people like the silence of the electric ranger.” The farm is also helping to increase biodiversity and provide food, cover and nesting for wildlife, along with protecting the historic features and parkland. As well as being used to silently stalk the deer, the Polaris EV is charged from electricity generated by solar panels on the farm, making another contribution to the ecologically sound objectives at Stourton.
